System and safety analyses – operation and safety culture in nuclear facilities
We provide in-depth safety assessments of the safe and reliable operation of nuclear facilities based on modern mathematical statistical risk assessment methods and tools (probabilistic methods) alongside more traditional deterministic approaches and accompanied by new criteria resulting from safety management and safety culture discussions. Our integral approach to systems assures a top level view on safety, availability and reliability of nuclear installations.

Services | Description |
Overall analyses of systems and operation of nuclear installations | Overall analyses of systems and operation of nuclear installations are no longer reduced to simple calculations of strength and reliability of components. Due to the increased complexity of the systems and the operational requirements and due to better methods and less epistemic uncertainties, we are able to have a more realistic view of the situation. |
Deterministic safety assessments of systems and operation | Deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses form the two pillars of TÜV SÜD’s safety assessments. As a supplement to technical safety assessments based on deterministic principles, probabilistic safety assessments (PSAs) are being increasingly implemented worldwide to reach decisions relating to safety. The aim of safety analyses is to evaluate the safety level of a given nuclear power plant and to uncover any weak spots. |
Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSAs) of systems and operation | Deterministic and probabilistic safety analyses form the two pillars of TÜV SÜD’s safety assessments. |
Reliability and availability analyses | Key information on system and component design, operating procedures and experiences, component and system reliability and human behaviour in a plant are compiled and an overall assessment of the current state and performance of the plant is produced. We are able to evaluate all types of systems, mechanical, electrical and I&C configurations. This covers all types of components, from complex turbines and pumps to simple ventilators. |
Evaluation of operating manuals and procedures | PSA results enable – based on the deterministic input of system analyses and the evaluation of operating experience – the comprehensive assessment of the safety concept of a nuclear power plant and allow quantitative information on its safety level to be gathered. Weak spots in terms of safety are recognised and the balance of the safety design is evaluated. |
Safety management and safety culture assessment | The systematic use of “classic” deterministic system analyses supported by comprehensive PSAs has resulted in a significant improvement in the safety of existing plants. Decision-makers thus increasingly use the results of deterministic and probabilistic safety assessments when it comes to safety issues. As a result of technical optimisation of systems, components and operation, nuclear technology has reached this high level of safety. But how safe is safe enough? In search of further improvements in the last years, the “soft issues” of operating a power plant have moved to the centre of the international “focus”. In this area we have built up knowledge and services to evaluate and certify safety management systems, to deal with safety culture issues and solve problems of operating systems and requirements. |
